The annual, highly anticipated Malaysian projection mapping competition, TERANG, once again transformed Penang’s UNESCO-listed Town Hall in George Town into a glowing canvas of digital artistry. As a powerful form of cultural storytelling, projection mapping stands out as one of the most immersive and entertaining mediums, captivating audiences.

This year’s competition featured works by established digital artists from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, alongside student submissions from universities across Southeast Asia. Out of 78 entries, 37 finalists were selected, including 11 guest works. The showcase revolved around the theme “Rojak,” the beloved local street food, symbolising diversity, contrast, and harmony.

We are proud to share that our Digital Media Design students’ projects, “Pieces of Me” by VYN Studios, secured 3rd Place in the competition, while “Different Us, Same Hustle” by Team XYZ secured 7th Place. Bursting with vibrant colours and seamlessly aligned visuals and animation, the projects were nothing short of spectacular.

Congratulations to the creative individuals behind this achievement, whose collaboration resulted in a truly memorable masterpiece. Their work impressed the judges with its striking visuals, compelling storytelling, and technical excellence, an outcome shaped by dedication, perseverance, and countless rounds of refinement. Over the nine-day festival, projections of iconic Malaysian symbols such as the Jalur Gemilang, hibiscus flower, and Penang’s famed shophouses, landmarks, and street food danced across the historic façade. Families, tourists, and local photographers gathered beneath the illuminated building, their faces lit by a shared sense of awe and wonder. Participating and winning competitions such as this gives our students the motivation and confidence to keep producing mind-blowing artworks. It is truly amazing that within the Malaysian creative scene alone, there are ample opportunities and platforms for young talents to emerge, showcase their best creations and get recognised. We are proud to witness student works gaining the recognition they deserve.
